Brief Summary of ODHA Delegate Activities in Washington, DC
2009 ADHA Annual Session

The ADHA Center for Lifelong Learning in conjunction with ADHA annual session was held Wednesday, June 17, 2009 through Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Full advantage of the legislative location was taken with Lobby Day on Wednesday. Ohio was well represented by Anne Henry, Angie Demko and Deborah Tennyson! Thank you ladies!

Many of Ohio’s official delegation supported ADHA by attending Continuing Educational offerings held during the week. Plenary sessions were informational and motivational. Thursday, with Meagan Johnson, we were made more aware of generational differences that may interfere with success. Saturday morning Dr. Brad Neider helped us remember to have a sense of humor.

I cannot begin to review all the business which the ADHA House of Delegates discussed and decided, starting with District Discussions (caucuses) on Saturday morning, but you can find a summary in the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association’s (ODHA) August 2, 2009 preBOT reports, posted on the Members Only Page of the ODHA website.

A very important issue that occurred was an entire overhaul of the ADHA Bylaws. ADHA is working hard to get these published to their website, I encourage all members to download and peruse a copy as soon as possible so that you will be familiar with how our association is doing business. Please note that the phrase “pass it now and we will fix it next year” was repeated frequently during debate. If in your review you recommend changes to the new bylaws please make sure to provide your “fixing input” to your 2010 delegates! It is also my understanding that ADHA intends to review all constituent bylaws to make sure they are in keeping with the ADHA bylaws.

Some of the other issues handled by the ADHA House of Delegates include creating definitions for terms like; white paper and dental home. Continuing to attempt to improve the policy manual that was totally revamped during ADHA Annual Session 2008 was also part of House business. Hopefully, policy statements have been made more global and useful.

Please note that ADHA has published a membership study, which the Board of Trustees commissioned this year called the Lang Report. It is imperative that you as members read this report and submit your thoughts to your District V trustee, Denise Bowers. You can find her contact information in the ODHA directory in the member’s only section of odha.net

You may also submit your input to ADHA directly. Call Karen Caspers.

Another issue ADHA is seeking input from you about is: 1. What role can and should ADHA play in removing barriers and promoting opportunities for dental hygienists to advance the profession? 2. What workforce models of practice currently in development are most likely to make this possible.

The backgrounder with information about these questions is still available on the ADHA website in member resources, delegate resources. There was a lot of great input provided during the Mega Issue forum already at annual session. Make sure your ideas are heard too!

Finally, but certainly not least, congratulations to Rachel Henry, Columbus member and ODHA membership committee member, for receiving the ADHA/Ester Wilkins Future Leader Award!
