Goal: To promote and secure our Profession in the areas served by the Northwestern Ohio Dental Hygienists' Association!

Objectives:

Goal and objectives developed in conjunction with 2002 Lima Technical College and 2003 Rhodes State College dental hygiene students.

9am-12pm: (3CEU) Breakthrough Biofilm Concepts – Dealing with Mother Nature's Microbial Masterpieces  
Speaker- Anne Guignon, RDH,MPH
Biofilms are complex polymicrobial communities that contribute to many chronic diseases, including periodontal disease and caries.  Biofilms play a significant role in the development of chronic wounds, delayed wound healing and persistent re-infections and resist traditional antibiotic therapy.  New combination therapies are emerging that treat Mother Nature’s most unique microbial challenges.
-What is a biofilm and how does it form?
-Understand the biofilm connection to chronic disease and recurrent infections
-Recognize the unique biofilm ecology in periodontal disease and caries
-Appreciate how xerostomia affects biofilm ecology
-Visualize biofilm with magnification, illumination and color technology
-Learn how to disrupt biofilm with ultrasonic scalers, xylitol and power brushes
-Identify new strategies to involve the patient in battling biofilm at home

Soft drinks are a regular staple in many diets. Popular drinks like soda pop, refrigerated teas, energy and sports drinks are fast tracking Americans into diseases that will haunt them for a lifetime. Learn the how and why these beverages are contributing directly to the epidemics of diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and dental caries. Discover which beverages are safe, which ones to avoid and how to combat their erosive potential.
-Recognize how soft drink consumption has changed through the years

-Understand beverage components

-Test pH values in a variety of non-alcoholic beverages

-Distinguish between pH and titratable acidity

-Learn how beverages are marketed to children and adolescents

-Discover the role of soft drinks in modern degenerative diseases

Speaker Bio- Anne Nugent Guignon, RDH, MPH is internationally recognized for four decades of contributions to dental hygiene and dentistry. She is a practicing clinician, columnist, feature writer and Senior Consulting Editor for RDH Magazine and has authored textbook chapters on ergonomics and power driven scaling.  Anne holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Texas Dental Branch and has been honored as the 2004 Philips RDH Mentor of the Year and received the 2009 ADHA Colgate Irene Newman Award.
***NWODHA will be raffling a voucher redeemable for one of the following: a pair of Orascoptic HiRes loupes on a titanium frame,
an Apollo portable LED headlight , a clinician ergonomic BodyGuard chair.  Drawing will be held at the end of the course.
Tickets:  One for $10, Three for $25.  Raffle tickets can be added to the registration fee.  There is no limit on ticket purchase.

There will be no NWODHA meeting the month of November. We encourage all of our members to attend the ODHA Annual Session at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, OH which will be held November 5-7, 2010.
