CE Opportunities...it's not too early to start!!
Now that we've passed the deadline for the recent renewal cycle, it's not too late to begin earning your minimum of 24 CEUs for the next renewal in December of 2013.

There are many opportunities for getting your CEUs. Put August 17, 2012 on your calendar and earn 6 CEUs this summer. ODHA also sponsors Total Development Weekend annually and there are numerous component sponsored courses. Check ODHA's site for opportunities in your area!

Student Mentors - Don't Forget Your Student(s)!!!
Several of us volunteered to mentor the Rhoades State Dental Hygiene students by contacting them by e-mail during this very busy and stressful last quarter before graduation. PLEASE don't forget to contact the students you volunteered to contact! It really means the world to them and any encouragement and advice you can give them is greatly appreciated!! Perhaps if we nurture these promising young women, we can inspire them to stay active in our association! They are now preparing for the clinical portion of ADEX-DH (formerly known as NERB) which will be on Wednesday, May 16th...send them an e-mail and let them know you're thinking of them!
Graduation - Saturday, June 9, 2012

Nutrition News:
Updates Affecting Oral and Systemic Health
Today’s focus on fitness and well-being continues to stress the importance of a good diet in achieving oral and systemic health. Nutritional counseling in the dental hygiene setting has proven to be a valuable, often overlooked aspect of delivering comprehensive patient care. This course will focus on current research findings involving considerations associated with all aspects of nutrition including vitamins and their functions, food additives, anti-inflammatory diet strategies, and oral manifestations of nutritional deficiencies. Participants will be provided with countless ways to integrate ‘nutritional news’ into their patient education strategies. Come prepared to laugh and learn!
Following the course, attendees will be able to:
• Understand the roles vitamins play in overall health
• Recognize the health ramifications of certain food additives
• Develop an ‘anti-inflammation’ diet strategy to share with patients
• Identify oral conditions associated with dietary deficiencies

1pm-4pm: (3CEU) “Diet Wars: The Effects of Diets on Oral and Systemic Health”
Presented By Betsy Reynolds RDH, MS

Diet Wars:
Looking at Today’s Dieting Trends and Their Impact on Dental and Systemic Health
South Beach? Atkins? The Zone? Weight Watchers®? Jenny Craig®? CortiSlim®? Cabbage Soup? Eating Right for Your Blood Type? Caveman? Grapefruit? Russian Air Force? 7-Day All-You-Can-Eat? Confusing???? You bet! America’s obsession with weight loss has lead to increasingly complex diets that impact general and oral health. This course will provide participants with an overview of current dieting trends in an effort to minimize confusion and maximize understanding of the effects of today’s dieting revolutions. Presented in a relaxed forum, clinicians will be able to incorporate information garnered in this course to provide more comprehensive nutritional counseling to dental patients as well as recognize possible sequelae of dieting trends. Come prepared to learn, enjoy and share your insights. Following this seminar, participants will be able to:
• Understand the physiology behind adipocyte development
• Recognize health risks associated with deep apple fat
• Differentiate between dieting trends
• Recommend healthy alternatives to poor dietary choices
