Owens State Community College Student Perspective on ODHA Annual Session 2007 |
November 2nd – 4th was a weekend of enlightenment and passion! Igniting the passion is ODHA’s theme from President Gretchen Matty’s year 2006-07 and ODHA’s annual session proved to be just that. For seven students from Owens Community College the weekend started off with a student orientation assuring us that our voice matters and we are the future of the dental hygiene profession. Following the orientation, we went to Opening Ceremonies, and the First House of Delegates where the RDHs and the students were officially welcomed and HOD procedures were reviewed. Officer nominating and/or seconding speeches were also given. During the Opening Ceremonies, two of our OSDB dental hygiene members, Clifford Jones and Ann Naber delivered greetings and District V Trustee, Denise Bowers updated us on ADHA goals and actions and introduced us to ADHA’s new branding campaign, Putting YOU at the center of ADHA-Unleashing Your Potential. The presentation of ODHA awards proved there are many passionate and generous dental hygienists in Ohio.
Saturday was a busy but encouraging day. We started out with reference committees and professional issues forum where we were amazed to see all of the discussion and opinions about the bylaws and resolutions. It was amazing to see hygienist fighting for their profession to be the best it can be. We were also encouraged to give our opinions, as some students did. It was very empowering to see that students can make a difference. Next was the luncheon with the House Representative John Adams. He spoke about the House Bill 188 and the Senate Bill 178. Having a representative that wants to hear from our profession and believes in our passion is invaluable. Then it came time for the students to shine. Table clinics were then presented and it gave us a chance to show our future employers and peers how much we have learned and how eager we are to share our knowledge with others. A reception followed to congratulate the students. Saturday night was an amazing night. When each of the components went to caucus, we, as students, got to voice our opinion again. We got to talk to each of the local Toledo delegates and ask questions if needed. We also spoke to each of the ODHA members that were running for ADHA delegate.
Sunday began with the Student House of Delegates where we actually voted on three different proposals. Then we voted for our Student Representative to represent our voice on the regular House of Delegates floor. Our voice was heard today when we voted on bylaw changes and amendments that could change the future of our professional careers!
As ODHA’s annual session wound down, we were disappointed that the weekend flew by so quickly. It was a busy weekend full of bylaws and meetings. However, we did have time for networking, a wine event, and even a little dancing. It was great to speak with other students and to see that we are all in the same predicament. In conclusion, ODHA’s annual session put a spark in each of our hearts.
